When Proctor had to go to the court to get his wife out of being accused of upholding witchcraft he eventually confess to his sins he committed. Talking to Danforth, Proctors says “I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweet. But it is a whore’s vengeance, and you must see it; I set myself entirely in your hands” (page 49 act three) confessing to the crime he did. Hughes uses his poem, The Minotaur, to try to manipulate the audience to see a different view of their marriage, and to make people feel sympathetic towards him. Hughes portrays his wife Sylvia Plath as violent, irrational, and out of control. This is shown in the way he shows her, in lines such as “The mahogany table-top you smashed”. The onomatopoeia of “smashed” further emphasises her violent personality. Later in the poem, Hughes accuses his wife of abandoning her family.

The first reason is that because Abigail Williams is extremely manipulative and vindictive. Abigail tries to get Procter to pity her saying, “You loved me, John Proctor, and whatever sin it is, you love me yet! John, pity me, pity me!” (Miller 22). Abigail wants Procter to pity and give her what she wants, regardless that his wife caught them once and can catch them again. Another reason their relationship is dangerous is that if John Procter were to prosecute against Abigail Williams saying that she is in fact a witch, Abigail Williams could very easily tell the entire town that she and Procter have been having an affair to get revenge on him.

Proctors wife has been convicted of being a witch by Abigal and the towns men are about to take her away and Proctor stands in front of them and says ,“Youl’ll leave her out of sight and out of mind mister!”(202) Also when he is in the court house trying to save his wife and admits to having an affair with Abigal ruining hiss own name to save his wife. “I have known her sir!...God help me I lusted” (miller 221). Proctor throws his reputation away to save his wife. In Act five John Proctor threw everything that’s happened becomes a noble man. When he’s talking to his wife and makes the decision for himself “John Proctor: what should I do woman!”... “I’m sorry John it is not my decision John” (Miller 239).
She gets revenge on Elizabeth Proctor because she is fired by the Proctor's and is in love with John, Elizabeth's husband. She is jealous of Elizabeth because she had an affair with John but he chooses his wife over Abigail. Abigail proves she is still in love with John by the jealousy she portrays when she says”Oh, I marvel how such a strong man may let much a sickly wife... She is a cold, sniveling women, and you bend to her!”(pg 23& 24). In order for her to get John she needs to get rid of Elizabeth. She does this by accusing her of witchcraft and claiming that “the familiar spirit of Elizabeth Procter stabbed her with a needle” (2, 24-25).
Despite Dimmesdale’s physical deterioration, Hawthorne develops Dimmesdale as morally strong to assert that atonement of one’s sin leads to morality. Arthur Dimmesdale is one of the three main characters involved in the central conflict of the novel. He performed the sin of adultery while Chillingworth was away, and Pearl is his true daughter. Yet, unlike his fellow adulterer Hester, the town does not know of his crime. Watching every day as the people say things to Hester like “At the very least they should put a hot iron on Hester’s head” and “[Hester] ought to die”(88) drives Dimmesdale mad.
Celia and George, a fellow slave who had ran away, were the main suspects in the disappearance of the old man. Celia underwent long trials and had a defense team on her side. Despite her being sexually exploited by Newsom, it was questionable whether Celia was protected under rape and self defense laws. Celia’s case was extremely controversial and was quickly reported to the public through local newspapers. The bias in these articles and personal opinions on the case caused tensions between proslavery and antislavery forces.
Tayjah Jenkins Eng T390 Why doesn't Sethe leave her haunted house? Sethe doesn’t leave her haunted house because she promised that she would never run from anything in her life again. Sethe is an ex-slave who was brutally torched by her slave masters whom she had to run from almost her entirely life. She still is taunted by her past and can’t seem to break from it by small reminders such as her baby haunting her house. In the story Beloved, Sethe had to kill her youngest child to stop the slave masters from taking it from her and threw the baby in the river.
