16 October 2012 Literary Analysis on Theme The main theme in “The Devil and Tom Walker” written by Washington Irving is that greed brings a person to his/her downfall. Greed is shown many times throughout the story, but the main theme is shown when Tom’s wife dies because of her greed, and eventually Tom is subject to the same fate. Greed bringing a person to his/her downfall can be seen as the obvious theme in “The Devil and Tom Walker” because of several examples from the story. First, when Tom’s wife was informed of the hidden gold, she urged Tom to agree with the black man’s terms.
