During the last decade, the Internet enriched our social lives and our civic connections. People use e-mail, on-line chat rooms and instant messages to communicate with each other. Even adolescents can use the Internet as the same as the older people. But, heavy use of the Net can bring some bad consequences to the adolescents more than what they do on adults. Brent Staples, in “What Adolescents Miss When We Let Them Grow Up in Cyberspace” (2004) pointed out the consequences of adolescents cruising the Net.

He is impressed how far the technology had advanced over years. Jonathan Franzen mentions that the social websites, like Facebook, has substituted the way to live the real life. It represents the obsession with the internet, smartphones and other things that contribute to the construction of our façades. People are afraid of their emotions and feelings and being hurt, scares them. Therefore they want to stay behind their computer screen, where they can be safe and keep a distance from the real world.
Online chat sites are another way technology is working its magic. Kids, teens and adults go on these online chatting websites and often finding themselves staying on these websites for hours, or even days at a time, severely limiting their real human interactions. People with a great family and great friends go on these chat websites and waste away their lives talking to a screen. The internet and the technology we use to access it are a way for people to hide from their real life problems. When people go on the internet, they feel like they can say whatever they want, mostly because they don’t have to say it to anyone’s face.
Dislike Button on Facebook One of the greatest evolutions of Facebook is the creation of the ‘Like’ button. With it, people could use it as a tool to provide support to another person’s thoughts and ideas instantaneously. However, the creation of the ‘Like’ button also lead to the debate that a ‘Dislike’ button should also be implemented, so the user can have the option to vote in favor, go against, or be neutral to the certain thought or idea. There are even a few Facebook pages exist for people trying to get a ‘Dislike’ button integrated alongside the ‘Like’ button (Abby, 2013). While implementing the ‘Dislike’ button seems pretty harmless to most of us, it could actually leave a negative impact on individuals, society and businesses.
Technology in a teenager’s daily life allows them to have convenient access to the outside world. Teenagers at school are using a variety of technology for education and entertainment purposes. Although technology is enriching their lives, it also has a negative impact on them. Social networking sites such as Facebook is a part of a teenager’s social life. Facebook is a social networking service and website launched in February 2004.
The main purpose of social networks is communication. By communication it is meant that people interact, exchange information, and maintain relationships with people whom they care about. Although, some people say that social networks destroy youth, nowadays they are spending their whole day on the internet nurturing their virtual friendships instead of real ones; they are actually complementing their social lives. For example, by using social networks we are able to make new friendships with people from all around the world. We are no longer limited to society that surrounds us and we are able to expand our circle of friends.
