“Let My People go Surfing” outlines the history and philosophies of Patagonia. “Let My People go Surfing” is written by founder and owner of Patagonia, Yvon Chouinard, Yvon opens the book by giving a brief history of his life and how he began Patagonia. Patagonia started as, Chouinard Equipment, which specialized in high end rock climbing gear. Their inventory soon spread beyond just climbing equipment when they started making shorts, backpacks and polo shirts. Through their new clothing line Patagonia was born. Soon Patagonia became one of the most popular outdoor clothing and equipment companies in the world. What I liked most about this book was learning about Patagonia’s many different philosophies. Philosophies such as product design, distribution, management, and human resources I found very interesting, it helped me understand how a company is actually run. But what I found most interesting was the Environmental Philosophy. We all know the point of a big company is to make as much profit as possible. In big companies such as Walmart and Mcdonald's their sole purpose is to make as much profit as possible. They hardly care about their customers and the last thing on their mind is the health of the environment. Yvon has made attempts at every step of the way to cut down his environmental impact. In his original climbing company he stopped making his hottest selling item and presented a new and improved version that caused lets harm to the mountain. In Patagonia, Yvon has used the most environmentally friendly fabric and dies. He has also studied the life cycle of these fabrics to learn about how the effect the environment after being disposed of. In addition to the scientific research and improvements he has made on his clothing line, Yvon donates 1% of Patagonia’s total sales to a variety of environmental groups. Yvon also talks about how
