The Advantages of Legalizing Prostitution: Contrary to popular belief, there are various advantageous to legalizing prostitution that have proven to be effective in various regions of the world. It is often argued that the greatest benefit of legalizing prostitution is the increase in workplace safety for a sex worker. Sex workers in developed and developing nations alike have been known to be victims of various types of abuse and as a result of being outside the realm of the protection of the law, have often little to no rights or any form of protection. The legalization of prostitution allows for prostitution to be regulated and thus provide sex workers with a sense of legitimacy. This sense of legitimacy is important because in many societies, the topic of prostitution is a highly contentious one and very taboo. Furthermore, sex workers are often stigmatized and marginalized from society and more particularly, the legal system. This stigma and long-standing taboo is often acknowledged as stemming from many societies recognizing it as an amoral and unethical profession. Also, many secular states are against prostitution simply for the reason that prostitution goes against the teachings of particular religions. Additionally, legalizing prostitution would allow for it to be recognized as a profession and allow for sex workers to be recognized as having a legitimate job. If prostitution was legal, as with any other profession, sex workers would be taxed and the proceeds would benefit the government, which in turn could allow the government to use that money to fund essential services. Another advantage of legalizing prostitution is that it would allow for sex workers to have a safe working environment, allow for the maintenance of dignity - dignity that is often taken away when they are subject to various types of abuse.
