Prostitution raises many ethical issues from it being immoral because it tends to involve coercion, prostitution can be exploitive, it is degrading and involves violence/HIV. However, on the other side of the board, many people feel prostitution is an American freedom, a victimless crime and should be legal. One reason given as to why prostitution is immoral is that it tends to involve coercion. In most cases, people do not freely decide to become prostitutes. Sometimes, they are driven to the profession by desperation and a lack of other employment opportunities.

Legalized prostitution would create better health conditions and a safer environment for prostitutes and the rest of the community while boosting the economy from the taxing of prostitution and focusing our attention on more devastating issues like trafficking. The debate on prostitution has been revived by the recent reports of the Governor of New York, Eliot Spitzer’s resignation after he was revealed as a customer of an escort service. Spitzer was often titled as in fierce opposition of prostitution, a stance that is shared with an overwhelming majority of the American public. According to Marcia Clemmitt, a social-policy reporter, “denial and ambivalence characterize most American attitudes on the sex trade.” Even with the stance Americans have taken on the issue, when asked if they would be partial to some form of legalization, 25 to 47 percent of Americans are for it (Glazer).
