The attitude in Atwood’s Siren Song by Margret Atwood is captured by an image of the sirens described as “picturesque and mythical.” Atwood draws her readers in by having the sirens use their sex appeal to lure in men and force them to “leap overboard in squadrons.” She then goes on and gives the readers the assumption that the sirens are bored with their beauty, and are almost sickened with the same routine and outcome. “Shall I tell you the secret, and if I do will you get me out of this bird suit?” that implies that the sirens are bored. We see that the song is “irresistible and anyone who has heard it is dead or can’t remember it.” This makes us as readers more interested. The sirens trick men with their beautiful song, and lure them into their deadly

Particularly in part two, the water becomes like “Witch’s oil” the reference to witchcraft could have been seen as predominantly terrifying at the time as the fashion of “Witch hunts” was still rife in the era of publishing; particularly in Eastern Europe and North America, and would have been a practice still in the memory of previous generations. Additionally, at the height of Romanticism in which nature is presented to be a largely wonderful thing the idea of nature becoming so wrong and terrifying could be seen as one of the most abject parts aspects of the mariner’s tale. After killing the albatross the mariner and the sailors begin to rejoice at his actions as the fog clears away in part two, however, they become becalmed and suffer from thirst and hunger now blaming the mariner for their circumstances by hanging the Albatross around his neck. In part three a skeleton ship appears and it seems there is hope that the mariner and the crew will be saved, however they cannot call out to the ship as they have “Black lips baked” an incredibly gothic image that can possibly be compared to Shelley’s Frankenstein and when he describes his creation as having a “shrivelled complexion and straight black lips”. This image of the crew near death that seems to relate to the gothic idea of
Question before the Procession Shirley Jackson’s use of literary techniques in The Lottery is a true work of genius. She strategically uses irony in many places such as the story’s title, the setting an even in certain character’s personality traits. Another important literary technique used by Jackson is symbolism. The black box and the story’s title seem to create a range of associations outside themselves such as the importance of questioning irrational traditions and the unexpected nature of death. With the use of these two literary techniques, (irony and Symbolism) Shirley Jackson is able to emphasize important dramatic events within the plot.
They are named “The World on the Turtle’s Back”, “Genesis”, and “The Metamorphoses”. In every one of these stories there is a creator of the world. In “The World on the Turtles Back” a woman fell from the Sky-World and was put on a turtle where she started the world from land that was gathered and seeds she had. In “Genesis” God creates the world and everything in it from nothing. In “The Metamorphoses” the world is made from chaos by the gods and everything except humans are made to dwell in it.

Her criminal offence and her personality of being malicious and wicked, however powerful and mature, allow the audience to appreciate the story and realise that she is pivotal in the play. She is a character who appears in critical parts of the play, and adds crucial information by her language, gestures and actions.
