Juan Carlos It is rare that a monarch is not born into the country he will one day rule. Juan Carlos was born into Rome on January 5, 1938, and the chances of him one day ruling Spain looked slim. Juan Carlos's father Alfonso XIII was forcibly exiled in 1931 after 20 years of political turmoil. He then died 10 years later, and according to his last wishes his son, Juan Carlos, was sent to Spain at age 9 for a Spanish education. He finished his secondary education at San Isidro in 1954. He then went to study at a military school of the country. He then went to sea as a trainee on a training ship, he qualified as a pilot. He then went and completed his education at Complutense University, in Madrid. Into his middle life, Juan Carlos married Princess Sofia of Greece and, after their honeymoon, went to live at La Zarzuela Palace. Their first child was christened Elena and was born on 1963. Also, two years later, Cristina was born, followed by Felipe five years after that.…show more content…
To avoid internal conflicts after his death Franco appointed Juan Carlos as his successor. To get ready for his upcoming role as king of Spain, Juan Carlos made international visits to countries around the world. Franco died on November 30, 1975. Juan Carlos immediately proclaimed himself king of Spain and started to restore Spain back to a democracy. Soon after the national change to democracy there was an attempted coup by pro-Franco military officers who stormed into parliament. This coup was broken up by a stern TV appearance by Juan Carlos himself. Juan Carlos is still alive and on the throne today. He is a sportsman and his two favorite sports being skiing and sailing.
