John Joseph Gotti Jr. was born on October 27, 1940. He was the fifth child of eleven children. His parents were John J. Gotti Sr. and Philomena Gotti. Due to poor medical care some of the children die at an early age. Gotti was raised in the poor part of the South Bronx. At the age of 10, John and his family moved to the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood of Brooklyn. A year later they moved to an area in Brooklyn know as East New York. John was called “Johnny Boy” at an early age and he learned to use his fist to get his way. He was jealous of other people who had a better life and was angry at what they had. By the time he was twelve, he was caught up in the street activity he lived around. Instead of wanting to be a businessman or a lawyer, he wanted to become a wise guy. Gotti became part of gang with brothers Peter and Richard that ran errands for wise guys. In school, John was known as a distraction in the class room. Teachers were not concerned when John did not show up at school. In 154, Gotti was injured while trying to help steal a cement mixer. The cement mixer tipped over, crushing his toes. By the age of 16, Gotti quit school and joined a gang called the Fulton-Rock Away Boys. These gang members were involved in the higher levels of crime such as: stealing automobiles, fencing stolen goods, and rolling drunks. Between 1957 and 1961, Gotti had become a full time criminal. He had been arrested five times by the time he was twenty-one. In 1962, John married 17 year old Victoria Digiorgio. When they married they already had a daughter, Angela, and Victoria was pregnant with their second child. John and Victoria separated many times during the early years of their marriage.
