JFT2 Task 1 Sherri Meeks A1. Bill Bailey theory of motivation to oppose or support the merger McClelland’s Need Theory is selected as the most appropriate theory for Bill Bailey to utilize to support a merger between Utah Opera with Utah Symphony. McClelland’s Need Theory is categorized as a Content Theory that supports needs influence motivation. David McClelland researched and developed this theory in the late 1940”s with research that supports peoples need for achievement, affiliation, and power. Achievement motivated people prefer working on moderately difficult tasks, prefer achievements that are related to performance efforts, and crave a higher level of feedback than low achievers. Persons with needs for affiliation choose to spend time maintaining social relationships, joining groups, and need to be loved and also avoid conflict. The need for power identifies a person’s desire to influence, teach, coach, or encourage others in regards to achievement. (Kinicki). Bill Bailey can apply the concept of need for achievement to the merger support by requiring regular updates from the task force committee as they meet and collectively discuss information gathered in regards to consideration of the merger. Bill can meet the need for affiliation by active involvement with the committee which provides opportunities to build relationships with others involved in the merger decision. As previously stated, the need for power demonstrates ones desire to influence, coach, and teach, or encourage achievement in others. Bill can apply this concept of the theory by having the committee accomplish group goals thus instilling a feeling of competence. A2.
