Paul Lombardi College English Definition Essay Mrs. Brennan 12/05/14 ! ! Jealousy Jealousy. Such a simple word, something most people have, and felt that can sometimes get the better of them. Jealousy can be resentment of a rival, of a person who is enjoying success or advantage, or against another's success or advantage itself. Jealousy can be a lethal, some may argue that it’s the most lethal part of humans and our existence. There are many factors that can spark jealousy in a person, whether it be love, jobs, family, friends. Also there are many forms of jealousy, such as harmless jealousy and fatal jealousy. ! The root of all jealousy stems from envy. This is when someone feels angry or upset over someone else's advantages or success. This can bring out the true colors in people. Envy is a powerful thing, it can destroy lives and wreck any bit of success in a persons life. Bertrand Russell once stated “envy is one of the most potent causes of unhappiness. Not only is the envious person rendered unhappy by his envy, but they also wish to inflict misfortune on others. Although envy is generally seen as something negative, I also believe that envy is a driving force behind the movement towards democracy and must be endured to achieve a more just social system.” Envy can cause bitterness and hatred, and eventually loneliness. No one would want to be around a person who is constantly envious over others and has a sense of hatred because of it. ! Harmless Jealousy; this can be described as maybe a girlfriend getting a little angry that her boyfriend is admiring another woman, or maybe a friend got a nicer car or better gift that you, or even because a friend or family member is dating someone and you're still single.
