Is body modification a personal choice? In the 21th century, body modification although it still makes people curious because it is what we may call “eye-catching”, it isn’t hidden or “bad” anymore. In our society, certain people try to stay “unnoticed”, be part of the “normal” group, and there are people who try to be “different” and stand out. We can notice there the terms of “normal” and “different”. But trying to be different or trying to be normal? Through the topic of body modification, we will try to analyze human behaviour in a society. Tattoos, piercings, hair dye or any kind of changes to the body, who or what do we do body modification for? Is body modification a personal choice? Structure versus Agency is a major sociological key debate, it attempts to explain how a society is created and where our place as human being is, but also how we fit in it. Does the society we live in determines our lives? What determines our individual behaviour, social structures or human agency? The human behaviour and the interactions between humans in a society are the major topics in sociology. Although the question that sociologist ask themselves are the same, their answers and theories can be completely opposite. One of the main concerns in sociology is the debate between structure and agency, concerned about the amount of individual choice we have over our behaviour related to our position in the society. Using different approaches, they aim to understand and explain how a society is created and what position our behaviour takes in it. Some consider our behaviour a result of social “norms”, other consider it as a personal choice, and recent theories consider a combination of both. According to the Structure side of the debate, we have no such thing as personal or individual choice, we are defined and controlled by factors of influence such as
