Everyone can agree on what a villain is without argument, but that is not the case when it comes to deciding what a hero is. A hero is many different things to many different people. We call them superhuman, half man, half mutant, justice seekers hiding behind a mask dedicated to protecting the public, or they are just ordinary people with exceptional skills and intellect. These heroes can be real or imagined, but in all reality defining a hero really defines who we are. We characterize our values and morals by choosing a hero. Therefore, I have chosen Batman, Bruce Wayne, “The Caped Crusader,” “The Dark Knight” as my hero and will discuss why I think he is a true hero. It has been said that heroes are not born, they are made. That is very true in Bruce Wayne’s case. At a young age, he fell into a cavern swarming with bats. This incident not only brought on his fear of bats, it also made him fill totally insecure in his own world; a world which should feel totally safe at that age. His fear and insecurities only escalated after he watched a mugger shoot his parents in cold blood. It was at his parents’ graveside that he vowed an oath to punish all criminals and to make the world a safe place for everyone. Batman, the hero, was made. He chose to turn a loss and fear into a reason to make the world a better place. Batman has dedicated himself to saving the citizens of Gotham City. He eats, sleeps, and breathes protecting others; probably the most important trait of any hero. He has given up his own life so that the citizens of Gotham will not have to endure the tragedy that he did. He puts others above his own personal life without expecting anything in return. Batman fights crimes daily with the help of the Gotham police, but many ponder whether he actually is a hero because he does not kill his enemies and get rid of them for good. He has
