Case Study 3.1 Rochelle Beauport, an assistant brand manager who works at Hy Dairies, Ltd., is acknowledged with an immense improvement in product sales and market share. Ms. Beauport is one of the top women and few noted ethnic employees in brand management department. Syd Gilman, the vice president of marketing at the same company has offered Ms. Beauport a lateral promotion, from assistant brand manager to market research coordinator. This has happened because of her accomplishment of increasing the sales of Hy's gourmet ice-cream. Mr. Gilman presumes that Ms. Beauport is excited about the opportunity he has extended to her because the marketing coordinator job would give her expansive involvement in any high-prolific work, which could help boost her career with Hy Dairies. Ms. Beauport on the contrary, had appreciated her previous position as it was more demanding and could affect the company’s future revenue, whereas this new position was a behind the scenes kind of job. Ms. Beauport is not enthusiastic by this proposal and is concerned that Mr. Gilman has blindsided her. She starts to wonder if Mr. Gilman is against having a female and a person of minority in an upper management environment. Although she is hesitant, she accepts the new position. However, Mr. Gilman does not comprehend the perception he has given to Ms. Beauport regarding this dilemma. While there is no direct stereotyping being done from Syd Gilman to Rochelle Beauport, there is some stereotyping being done from Ms. Beauport. She does not believe that Mr. Gilman is giving her an opportunity to advance her career at Hy Dairies by laterally promoting her to the market research coordinator position, but that he is actually hiding her away because she is a female and a person of minority and could not handle to pressure as her previous employer had told her.
