Dependable When you first think about Dependability, you think of ‘doing what you say you are going to do when you say you are going to do it’. True that is an important part of dependability. It means that when you work in a team in HSBC, you can depend on people to work together to get the job done. It means that when you email a colleague, you can depend on them to reply as soon as possible. It means you can depend on colleagues to put their all into their work. However to me Dependability is much more than that. It means I can depend on my colleagues to do the right thing in a broader sense. As one of the world’s largest corporations, HSBC is not just a company, but also a sizeable part of society. As such, doing the right thing means recognising our impact on society. Our stakeholders must be able to depend on us to do what we know is right. An example of this is HSBC’s support of Diversity and Inclusion in the workplace where HSBC is addressing these often complex issues to ensure 'fairness and equality of opportunity for all'. It is important that HSBC expects such dependability from all of its quarter of a million employees. I express my dependability in my work as Chair of the HSBC Business Language Champions which promote language learning and cultural awareness in the community. Given that languages are no longer compulsory at GCSE in the UK, the BLC visit secondary schools around the UK to emphasise the importance of language learning in business. Schools the BLC visit have 4% higher uptake in languages at GCSE. This is another example of the employees of HSBC recognising their ability to effect positive social change. Through a culture of Dependability, HSBC not only allows but expects its employees to pursue what they hold to be right. Dependability contributes to a collaborative culture where people are motivated to build and justify the trust
