“Something’s Rotten in Hondo” Case Study (The Enironment) Kaplan University MT310-02: Ethics and the Legal Environment February 15, 2010 Introduction Something’s Rotten in Hondo (The Environment) George had moved from El Paso, Texas to Hondo, Texas with his family four years ago to assume the roll of the manager at Ardnak Plastic Inc. This plant manufactures plastic parts for small equipment and has several hundred workers from the town of Hondo. For the past few months George has been getting calls from his boss Bill because the emissions from the plants smokestacks were constantly above Environmental Protection Agency guidelines and if the problem is not resolved immediately there will be fines to pay. George has admitted this has been a constant problem but without new smokestack scrubbers, which corporate headquarters has denied, he was out of ideas. As George continued to contemplate this dilemma he began making phone calls to other Ardnak plants and discovered that they schedule the mass of their production at night to evade the Environmental Protection Agency periodic emission readings.
MEMO To: Mr. Leighton Smith CEO From: Jesika Wirefly, Elementary Division Manager CC: Human Resources, Production Department Date: October 25, 2014 Re: Constructive Discharge I am writing this memo as a result of the recent event where a former employee has resigned once a new schedule change was put into effect. This is commonly referred to as constructive discharge. This employee has alleged that our factory is being discriminatory against his religious holy day due to the required 12 hour schedule that has been implemented. Originally the staff was required to work 8 hour shifts from Monday to Friday. The schedule has now been modified to a rotating 12 hour shift that runs from Monday to Sunday to accommodate our increasing
Mendez a character in the book broke his promise and made the immigrants wonder in the wrong direction for days, in the book he calls for a group meeting, since he saw that Reymundo Jr. a young child was close to dying and said “Mendez call them together. Or they called Mendez to their meeting. Mendez told them they were doomed unless he went to get help from them. They collected seventy dollars, they collected ninety dollars. Or three hundred dollars” (151).
We have been on a raid into Ms. but I have not time to give you the particulars of our trip. I will write in a few days if I can get a chance to send it and write you a long one. I just came off of picket and found the boys all writing to send by a man that has been discharged who is going to start home this morning. I was quite sick three or four days while in Mo. but have entirely recovered.
After purchasing this book, I read the back of the cover and was intrigued and interested by the noble idea Barbara Ehrenreich sets out to investigate –the many trials and tribulations of low-income workers in America. It’s easy to watch any mainstream television show such as “The OC,” and get a false perception of the American Dream. But rarely do people get to see the true American Dream – Joe the Plumber, err… Landscaper, making minimum wage and trying to keep his 1983 Honda Accord running properly day after day, all while trying to scrounge up enough money to make his monthly rent. With that being said, I believe that anyone can overcome economical difficulties, if they put forth the hard work and manage their budget correctly. Ehrenreich’s egotistical perceptions compromised her investigation, and failed to change my opinion on poverty and prosperity.
DH walks out of his office, comes over to my area and calls over RS. He begins the conversation and proceeds to tell us that "... YOU (BE) has requested so-called Teleworking Reports from everyone who teleworks at any given time on a daily basis" as told to him by DT." The tone of his initial statements is not pleasant and/or very professional… I'm paraphrasing at this point... He continues by saying that the request is stemming from a few things, but YOUR request: 1. Is a backlash from the unscheduled telework/unscheduled annual leave that was issued to all federal employees during the snow almost 2 weeks ago.
He usually gets in an argument with his boss or coworkers over a perceived injustice and walks off the job. He is a skilled mechanic and soon finds work elsewhere. Vickie works as a secretary for a small business and has had the same job since she was 19. Even though she has no college education, she has worked her way up to a responsible position and is well paid. Ben started another new job and was away at a specialized training when Vickie realized that she felt more relaxed and happier when Ben wasn't there.
(Loving 283) Walt got a promotion to a higher clerkship position on May 1, (Reynolds 455) and then was fired from his job on June 30 (Loving 290) by Senator James Harlan. (Reynolds 455) Whitman was fired after Harlan found a copy of Leaves of Grass and did not want to employ the author of such a controversial book. (Malone 149) O’Connor protested Whitman’s termination and as a result he was transferred to the Attorney General’s office on July 1. (Kaplan 304) He was employed there until January
Meursault through out the book is concerned with how others perceive him. On page one in the middle of the page Meursault is telling about his boss and says this, "I asked my boss for two days off and there was no way he was going to refuse me with an excuse like that. But he wasn't to happy about it. I even said, ""It's not my fault.""." This indicates that Meursault is concerned with how his boss would not
Taking my children out to see the jets at the airport on my days off is great family time. On one of those enjoyed days, we observed team members jumping and racing the golf carts use to transport customers to and from their million dollar aircraft. Calling the supervisor on duty and sharing this lack of self-control of his team members was well received and dealt with promptly. My operations manager called me into the office on my next day at work. He thanked me and shared how he sees the difference in the teams.
