Since the beginning of humanity it has been said that dogs are a man’s best friend and one of the most loyal companions a person could have. There are hundreds of dog breeds in the world and even more mixes and mutts than we can count. Each dog has its own unique set of characteristics and personality. With the household-owned canine population nearing eighty million, the question of how to potty train your dog is becoming one of the most sought-out answers in America. Once thing is certain, these adorable and lovable animals are only as desirable as the training they receive. Unlike what most people believe, potty training is extremely easy is you follow these simple steps. First you want to tie a bell to one of the doors leading to the back yard of your house. By using a long piece of string you can get the bell low enough for the dog to reach it with his nose or paw. Make sure to familiarize the dog with the bell as soon as you hang it. Manipulate your dog with a treat to get it to look at the bell while simultaneously feeding him the treat. This enables the dog to visually associate the bell with going in the back yard. Teaching your dog that ringing the bell is a pleasant experience is key to training your dog to learn where and when to go to the bathroom. The next step is to encourage your dog each and every time he goes outside by using a treat and the bell simultaneously. Teach him to correlate one with the other. Start using verbal commands such as “Bells” or “Ring” to strengthen the dog’s association to it. Gently take the dog’s paw and show him how to ring the bell while saying the phrase.
