Although she was raised in an Orthodox Jewish family, she married a black man, and then went on the raise all her children as Christians. Although facing adversity for these reasons, James McBride and his siblings still became successful, mostly because of the strength his mother provided for his family. All of the McBride children were put through college by his mother, even though they often struggled with finances. McBride tells how certain events in his everyday life and his background shaped and molded him into who he is today. I believe that in writing this book, McBride is establishing the fact that he is very proud of his success and how his mother was key in helping him accomplish it, but most of all, proud of his mother for being who she was.
This novel is a great novel to give an example on how reality is to people even the high class. It lead her to Zach someone that showed her color doesn’t matter. He showed her to dream big, never give up, love, live her life, and there is always something better. Gatsby’s heroism in the war, determination in the pursuit of his dreams, and his tenacious devotion to the love of Daisy forms Nick’s final opinion which leads him to give him the compliment. From all the events portrayed through the eyes of Nick in this novel, and after the death of Jay Gatsby, Nick states “Tom and Daisy-they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness…” Nick characterizes them by asserting that they are careless people who end up retreating back to their money and to the safety of their relationship after having their “good time”. After reading and looking back through specific parts of the novel and, as well, coming up with my personal conclusions; I must agree with the judgment to which Nick had made most frankly clear. Nick insists, by using the term ‘smashed’, that Daisy and Tom destroyed countless lives
In the cabin, while Charlie is meant to bribe Terry with a job so that he would keep quiet about the deeds of the union, Terry expressed his disappointment in Charlie. “It was you… you was my brother Charlie; you shoulda looked out for me a little bit.” Terry’s tone in speaking shows his pain and sorrow that Charlie places his own benefits above his passion and prospect. Charlie knows Terry has potential in boxing, but he forces him to lose the title so that he could win Friendly’s trust and favor. This ruins Terry’s reputation on the boxing field, so he could only work for Friendly as a longshoreman and as a person who assist their illegal activities. He was neither a core member of the union nor a worker accepted by other longshoremen on the dock.

One of the ways Editha views life is that to have good things one must prove himself or herself worthy of it, for instance her love. In the story when she's thinking about George, she says George, "had simply asked for her love... and she gave her love... but if he could do something worthy to have her, be her hero- it would be grander." What better way to prove his love to Editha by doing something he was not favorable towards for Editha's sake and allowing himself named captain of Company A for her amusement. Her true feelings for George come to light when she writes him a goodbye letter saying why she was breaking her engagement with him since the man she marries "must love his country first." She wrote that letter as soon as he left, it's quite unfair and she even realizes it yet still writes it to satisfy herself.
Anna Lacy AP Language and Composition; p6 Mrs. McFeely 22 March 2013 The Neon Sign A truly American Audience seeks literature that sparks the human- and specifically American- principles upon which the country was initially built. Ayn Rand is significant to an American Audience for this reason. She brings together the values of egoism, Capitalism, individualism, romantic realism and logic- the components of her philosophy, Objectivism, in her philosophically and metaphysically educational literary works. She enlightens, or reminds, the public about the means to achieve true and genuine happiness by reaching the best possible version of themselves. Rand is to be considered an American hero, thus extremely influential to any audience member she reaches, based on the practical American values she revives in her work.
Both men became murderers, but their motives and methods were distinctly different. Dorian Gray was a beautiful man and he never thought anything of it until the day he met Lord Harry Wotton. When the two met Dorian was getting his portrait painted by Basil who is friends with Harry. While getting his portrait painted Harry talks to Dorian about how “[…] youth is the only thing worth having” (Wilde 11) and that “beauty is a form of genius […]” (11). This starts Dorian to thinking how beautiful he really is and that he wishes he will never grow old.
In the story, “The Earth on Turtle's back,” an ancient chief tells his wife, who'd had a cogent dream previously, “When one has such a powerful dream, we must do our best to make it true.” The American Dream is the confidence in the opportunity to live a life the way you wish to live. Americans are dream chasers; we dream a life and strive to towards being able to live it. Dreaming is one of the most valued things an American can do, and having the ability to fulfill those dreams- even more so. Another attribution to the the concept of being an American is knowing where you came from, or your ancestry. In the story, “When Grizzlies Walked Upright,” an ancestry is explained.
