Evan Cole March 6, 2012 English 101 Mr. Raines American Opportunities Dinesh D’Souza’s essay “Becoming American” notes three reasons why the American life style is sought after, better standard of living, social freedoms, and an egalitarian society. I agree, America is a land where people create their own destinies, a land where people make their own choices and have near limitless possibilities. D’Souza’s gives his views on how the Americans society is seen by other countries. D’Souza states that most American critics have an easy explanation for why the American idea of living is so captivating. It is simply the ability to make money.
Hughes is describing America as this “great strong land of love,” which triggers readers’ emotions and makes them feel a desire to go to America in order to seek this love. Contrarily, by saying words like “let it be,” he is saying Americas has not come to the point or has strayed away from the point of love and he wants it for the future. From these two points, Hughes paints a picture of optimism and patriotism but reveals the harsh reality of America by giving the description of America as a place where “king connive… and man be crushed by ones above,” for the immigrants and the poor. This confirms that the current standard of living in America is not acceptable, and he hopes that in the future things will be different. Another example of juxtaposition shown is through man vs. environment, that is, in a society of poverty, greed and power of wealth: I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek, and finding only the same old stupid plan of dog eat dog, of mighty crush the weak, I am the young man, full of strength and hope,

Pg.389 7. I feel as if Emerson’s state about Thoreau being a true American to be somewhat true. Thoreau was patriotic in a sense because he cared deeply about the well-being and the actions of Americans. He feels as if the government is unnecessary because it only benefits the wealthy and those involved in it. Thoreau believes that the government takes the power out of the people’s hands.
An example of indecency was Gatsby’s memories and moments with Daisy. Back then, as he remembered and as Nick recalled, Gatsby was poor, working hard but drafted into the army for World War I; but as the departure prolonged, their love dissipated due to financial crisises. Naturally, Daisy married a rich man, Tom Buchanan but began to regret such marriage when Gatsby returned with popularity and wealth beyond anyone’s dreams. Daisy’s quick exchange between the two men was only because of order, who saw who first, and wealth, who was richer. Gatsby fulfilled both those choices and more; thus, Daisy logically would regret her “love” for him.
However, The Great Gatsby seems to be celebrating the energy of those seeking the American dream in the person of the main protagonist; the romantic and wealthy, but vulgar and criminal Jay Gatsby. If Nick Carraway can be considered authorial, then his admiration for Gatsby’s ability to reinvent himself and to be borne along by a romantic passion is a reflection of Fitzgeralds admiration for the strength of the new world. The play, in contrast, shows the excitement and evolution of the American dream, and the decline of the old world, especially because it is set after the end of the second world war, when there was a high level of patriotism amongst Americans. It shows the inevitability of the demise of the old world along with its old traditions, represented by Blanche Dubois, and the rise of the
