Many people have asserted that Singapore is a “ shopping paradise”. Ranging from hi-tech wares to designer wear, there is something for everyone. Browsing around local markets and shophouses in the ethnic enclaves to the glitzy portals of Orchard Road, the experiences are wide, varied and even intriguing. However, is it really only shopping that attracts a large number of foreigners into Singapore? Singapore is previously derisively called “ a little red dot”, sometimes mistakenly thought to be part of China, or remembered mostly for the chewing gum ban, or Michael Fay’s caning. Hence, what are the significant factors that attract foreigners into Singapore? Firstly, we have succeeded in many things that should not have been possible for a resource- strapped island economy. Singapore tops both regional and international rankings in a myriad of fields. Our school students do their bit for our nation’s public image, consistently topping the rankings internationally for Mathematics and Science. Singapore was ranked 7th in human capital because of our immigrant population, number of international schools, residents with university degrees and 4th placing in the world for the number of foreigner students. Our achievement in education is one of the main factors that draw foreigners to Singapore. These foreigners place their trust in Singapore’s education, believing that Singapore would be able to provide the best and most suitable studying environment for their children. They want their children to be equipped for a brighter future. Therefore, Singapore always attracts an influx of foreigners every year. Secondly, cities like London and New York may be more culturally diverse than Singapore, but still, the fact that we have four main races, Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian living cheek by jowl, having temples to mosques, for over forty years without any major
