The concept of culture can be applied to social systems at different levels, not only at the national level but also at the sub-cultural levels of ethnic group, region, gender, generation, religion, profession, and organisation. Culture is the substance that holds and binds groups together. Hofstede (1991) suggests that there is no such thing as human nature independent of culture. What, then, are the common features in definitions of culture? Most of the major definitions refer to culture as a set of shared values, beliefs, and practices.

I would probably be listening to rock or maybe pop music. I do listen to a little bit of that music but not too much. Country music is my favorite type of music. I grew up in the church listening to the old fashion hymns and I think that has a lot to do with why I like country music. The White Lotus Society had a large belief system which evolved over time, shaping its practices. Its practices and beliefs were attractive to many people, for the organization was rooted in equality and granted opportunities that were often not readily available. The White Lotus Society also gave advantages to the peasant class through mutual aid, rebellion, and a hope of a new society tied to their religious beliefs. Rebellion had always been an element of the White Lotus Society, but during the late Qing dynasty they were seemingly synonymous in Northern China. There was a great deal of unrest and the White Lotus Society was at the forefront of many uprisings, using them as a means of communication to the government.

Ever since mans existence, some form of religion has always been present. Religion, historically, has always been a major focal point for all societies and to some extent it is still seen as an aspect which is a predominant feature of modern society. Major world religions such as Christianity, Judaism and Islam are always front runners in terms of followers. However, new forms of religion are also becoming increasingly popular such as New Age Religions, these breakaway from traditional religions as these tend to focus more on the individual and spirituality.
