Steven Paz Prof. McKennon English 68 7/9/08 Is Music Bad for Society? There are very few things in this world that have the power to move and create emotions within society. Whether some people realize it or not, music is a huge component in peoples lives. Music can be very controversial. Even the slightest word can offend or disappoint many, many people. Numerous amounts of artists or musicians are seen as vulgar or obscene. Their lyrics, messages, or themes in the songs can be seen as distasteful. The main genres that stir up these shocking emotions are mostly in the fields of Rock and Roll, Rap, or Hip Hop. Both the visual and vocal aspects are seen as in need of censorship. Rock and Roll is very energetic and fast paced. There is so much time, energy and emotions put into making a song. But all of this emotion and energy is somewhat displeasing to some people. “Rock music has one appeal only, a barbaric appeal to sexual desire- not love, not Eros, but sexual desire undeveloped and untutored…” says A. Bloom in Junk Food for the Soul by Frank Zappa. Those who call for the censorship are upset with what these songs messages are sending out to the world. Our society is very demanding of behaving in a civilized manner. Zappa says, “The ugliness in this society is not a product of unrefined art, but of unrefined commerce, wild superstition, and religious fanaticism.” I have been scolded many times by my mother and aunts that the rock music I have been listening to is sacrilegious. Devils music. That is what some think of rock and roll. “November 1975, in Tallahassee, Rev. Charles Boykin of the Lakeswood Baptist Church burns rock ‘n’ roll records, calling them ‘ devils music.’” I listen to a lot of Slayer and Metallica and the main themes with those bands are death, blood and other themes.
