Colonial history, global economic integration and finally the assassination president Habyarimana was the perfect combination for the tragic genocide of the Tutsi people of Rwanda. This unfortunate genocide, which occurred from May 1994 to July 1994, was reenacted in the film “Hotel Rwanda”. In the movie, the main character and protagonist Paul Rusesabagina, a business savvy Hutu father married to Tatiana, a Tutsi. Is the manager of the Belgian owned hotel Sabena, Hotel des Mille Collines. After the official outbreak begins, he reluctantly turns the hotel into a safe haven for both Tutsis and Hutus, even though he would be killed if generals found out that he was keeping Tutsis safe.
The world didn’t want to pay for the supplies needed and to take the risk of their troops’ life. When 10 Belgians were killed in the mission, Belgium and other countries aiding Rwanda began withdrawing their troops
* Lost terriorty in Poland & Western Russia – PG were blamed for losses just like the Tsar was when took charge. * War made finical problems – Inflation still a problem and food shortages were high. * Russia expected these things to be stored out – PG short-lived because they were full of empty promises. Promised land reform to the peasants ( made up a large amount of the population , Bolshevik priority was to keep them on their side) no action was taken * Couldn’t guarantee food supplies as because soviet controlled the railways. * Political reform also promised political reform in an attempt to stop the revolutionaries but no action was taken.
In 1605-1612, the colonists experienced the longest drought (Doc B). Because of the lack of rain, they weren’t able to grow crops (Doc B). The seasons also caused diseases to spread (Doc E). The occupations of the colonists contributed to the colonist dying. They brought gentlemen, rich men that didn’t work with their hands, and they wanted other people to build their houses and hunt for their food (Doc C).
The civil war between the ethnic groups Hutu and Tutsi in Rwanda, like many civil wars in Africa, had colonial roots. However, the civil war took a extreme turn for the worst on a tragic day in April where thousands of Tutsis lost their lives in a relentless genocide that lasted a hundred days carried out by the Hutus. In this essay, I will explain the cause of the civil war, the 1994 genocide and the aftermath of the genocide. According to a articley called “Rwanda: How the Genocide Happeneded” in the BBC NEWS site, the conflict between the Hutus and Tutsi originated with the arrival of the Belgian colonist. Belgian colonial leaders and the Catholic Church deepened the racial divide between the majority Hutu populated country of Rwanda, by awarding Tutsi ethnic group better job and education opportunities.
The deep rooted hatred between Hutus and Tutsis began with status within a monarchy. Tutsis generally were “kings” or “nobles”, while Hutus took on the surf like roll, as they were the majority. When Belgium gained control of Rwanda in 1919 after the Treaty of Versailles, they furthered the tension between the classes by issuing racial identification cards, giving preference to Tutsis in positions of education, politics, and business. From April 6, 1994 through mid July 1994 roughly one million civilians were massacred as a result of the Rwandan civil war between the Hutus and the Tutsis. Hutu extremists slaughtered Tutsis and any Hutus that stood in the way.
“Hotel Rwanda”, The Story of a Hero. 19 yeas ago in Rwanda, Hutu extremists killed almost a million of the Tutsi tribe with guns and machetes, while the world stood by and refused to help. "Hotel Rwanda" is not the story of that massacre. It is the story of a hotel manager who saves the lives of 1,268 people by being very brave person. The film "Hotel Rwanda" is based on a real event that occurred during the Rwandan civil war.
In these events the writer focuses on a hotel manager by the name of Paul Rusesabagina that manages to save his family and a lot of others from the event of the civil war between the Tutsi and Hutu people. Varma does an excellent job of capturing the emotions of the viewers of this film. He does this by showing the brutality of the soldiers and their carelessness of children and families killing and beating them laying them into the streets. He also emphasizes that there was also greed for money because there are many times in the movie where Rusesabagina has to pay off the gorillas to save the lives of his guest and most importantly his family. One of the most abundant qualities of the movie that stood out was determination, love, and persistency to save what he loved by any means possible without harming another.
Paul Rusesabagina In 1994 in Rwanda, a million members of the Tutsi tribe were killed by members of the Hutu tribe in a massacre that took place while the world looked away due to the fact that Belgian occupants established the entire social separation of the Rwandan people. "Hotel Rwanda" is not the story of that massacre which was filmed by Terry George. It is the story of a hotel manager who saved the lives of 1,200 people by being, a substantially good hotel manager. He spends his days arranging favors for people in power and getting supplies to satisfy his prominent guests, he is the type of man who knows how things work in the real world, he uses his skills of bribery, flattery, apology and deception to save these lives that have come into his care as you could have seen in the film. Paul is a very wise man; he is a man who knows what is going on in the real world, he does courageous things throughout the film and wore different hats during the film.
Although Paul is a part of the Hutus, he feels the need to keep the Tutsis safe. Paul gets in contact with many armies to help protect their hotel with all the Tutsi refugees. Paul pays the militaries in alcoholic beverages to continue to protect them. At the conclusion of this genocide in 1994, there was between 500,000 and 1 million deaths. This story was based on a true story, and all of the characters in this movie were based on real people.
