Many alcohol advertisements are placed in different types of media that are popular among adolescent.” They spend billions of dollars in developing an advertisement to capture the publics’ eye, especially the young adolescents. The alcohol industry target a specific group mainly teenagers, but they don’t realize is that all of the colorful effects, the music, and the atmosphere of fun and excitement makes the teenagers want to take a shot or two. At John Hopkins University made a estimate, “the likely effects of several alcohol policies on youth drinking behavior in the U.S. population concluded that a complete ban on alcohol advertising would be the most effective, resulting in 7,609 fewer deaths from harmful drinking and a 16.4% drop in alcohol-related life-years lost.” Banning alcohol commercials can affect the life of young adolescents and adults by not having the influence or the temptation in front of you will decrease the amount of drinking in teens. Commercials have a lot of power over a person’s judgment persuading them to act like different
Some people say that the movie Pineapple Express seems to be along the lines of teenage humor or just mere immaturity. I on the other hand, I believe otherwise. When you take a look at all the drugs portrayed in the film (mainly marijuana) it reflects on a vast group of people in today’s general population. When I say that, I mean you do not see a movie based on people getting raped because it is not accepted in society or by the law. The film was viewed by many because in the days we live in now, drugs are becoming more and more socially accepted by the public in general, as shown in how many people enjoyed the movie.
As society becomes increasingly more accepting of gays and lesbians, it only stands to reason that serving openly in the military will become less of an issue; to corroborate this, a Gallup poll of young adults found that an astounding 91 percent were in favor of serving openly. Perhaps the more surprising information comes from the more conservative base. The same Gallup poll found “that solid majorities of people who attend church on a regular basis and people who hold negative attitudes about homosexuality believe that gays and lesbians should be allowed to serve openly in the military” (Belkin, 2007). DADT also has an impact upon the way Americans view the military. Recent polling of a sample audience that was designed to closely resemble the profile of a cohort of new military recruits; e.g.
Legalizing gay marriage will create role models for young gay people, who experience the struggle of “coming out of the closet.” This could also heal the gay-straight rift more than anything. “So long as intelligent people understand that homosexuals are emotionally and sexually attracted to the same sex as the heterosexuals are to the other sex, then there is no human reason on earth why it should be granted to one group and not to the other,” (Sullivan, page 407) said
Explain ways in which the AIDS epidemic shook American’s general confidence beginning in the 1980s. In the United States AIDS was detected in 1981. Politicians were slow to respond to the AIDS widespread because they felt that the people that were affected by AIDS were mainly homosexual men and they felt they could ignore this group of people. President Reagan was unwilling to bring AIDS into the spotlight and even ordered his Surgeon General not to discuss the crisis. Reagan felt that it was a homosexual disease however; it did not take very long for the disease to spread beyond the gay community and affect the lives of many Americans (Shultz, 2012).
Coming out and "Pride parade" have remained an important part of modern LGBT movements, and the visibility of the lesbian and gay communities has continued to grow. Gay liberation is also known for its links to the counterculture of the time, and for the Gay liberationists' intent to transform fundamental institutions of society such as gender and the family. In order to achieve such liberation, conscious understanding and direct actions were moved into motion. By the late 1970s, the radicalism of Gay liberation was moved by a return to a more formal movement that espoused gay and lesbian civil rights. Although the "Stonewall Riots" in 1969 in New York are popularly remembered as the spark that produced a new movement, the origins predate this iconic event.
Each of these perspectives has their own influences as to why someone becomes a homosexual whether it is from being within the family or the chemicals within the brain causing it. Historical perspective is the perspective that a person becomes a homosexual because in some cases it is part of their tradition. Homosexuality has been around for a long time and was also displayed in areas such as vases within Rome. Homosexuality was looked down upon though by many including the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic communities. When it came to homosexuality it was looked down upon so much that if convicted the person did not get sent to prison but instead was sentenced to pay a fine.
I think it really is amazing how they have so many statistics on sexual and reproductive health. I think this article has really brought to light a lot of things I wouldn’t know if I hadn’t read this essay. I think that if more people were aware of these statistics it would help lower some of these because a lot of these numbers are ridiculously high. I also think the following article on young men’s sexual and reproductive health was very informative. I think it is great to see that the use of condoms has jumped from 69% to 71% among 15-19 year olds.
For instance, the majority of sexual, and sometimes violent, imagery of women in the media has been suggested to play a role in increasing rates of sexual assault. The frequency of images of male aggression and female sexuality in the media has been seen as another potential cause of sexual assault. These cultural explanations have been proposed to add to the effects of the issues. In the past 30 years, the awareness of sexual assault has grown. Research specifically directed toward sexual assault on university and college campuses has increased, and the public has been more informed on the issue.
I think I both agree and disagree with how they portrayed certain issues in this movie. The conclusion of the movie ended with gays getting some rights, but on the other hand how homosexuals were treated throughout the movie was horrible and I definitely don’t agree due to my view and opinion on this issue. I am well aware that homophobia is a serious issue in todays society and you hear lot more about it today then what you would have ten years ago, and being gay is found a lot more common. I believe myself to have a strong understanding on the diversity in sexuality and more importantly discrimination. I have family members that are attracted to the same sex and I personally don’t think of them to be any different.
