Hayley Taylor 9/16/11 History-6 SHS Tragedies It was like any regular day for a first grader on September 11th of 2001. My teacher was Mrs. Gayle, and my friends and I were coloring when one of my peers said “There was a bomb in New York!” We really didn’t know what to do or think when that was said. My teacher went across the hall to talk to the other teachers and came back to explain to us in the easiest matter what had happened. She told us planes had hit the Twin Towers in New York and lots of people had been killed. Mrs. Gayle then turned on the radio and we tried to listen to what we could. The principle, Mrs. McMillan, came on the announcements and said parents were heading to the school to pick their children up.…show more content…
Cave, a senior citizen from Snyder, stated that Pearl Harbor was a depressing event for the world during 1941. Her and her family were getting ready for church and listening to the news on the radio when they first heard about the catastrophe. “We were contemplating going to church when the first bomb fell”, said Mrs. Cave. The attack lasted over a period of time. My family didn’t know if it was safe to leave the house. Back then, it took news longer to travel so by the time they had heard about it, the second bomb was struck. Mrs. Cave said she had a family friend who was a soldier during this time and he was going to be shipped off to help with WWII. Her parents wanted to go to Decatur in hope of watching the troop train pass by and seeing their friend. Like so many families, waving good-bye to a soldier could have meant that would be the last time they would be seen. Many thousands of wives, children, and parents hugged and said good-bye to brave and valiant young men who never returned. Mrs. Cave and her family witnessed the sad good byes. She said this was probably the most memorable part and this will stick with her the rest of her life. She also said from that day on, people did not want to be out of hearing distance of the radio; holding their breath at each news release regarding the raid on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese in a sneak attack which killed Americans and nearly destroyed the US Naval fleet.
