Raymond Carver’s “Cathedral” is about an insecure husband that is threatened by his wife’s friendship with a blind man named Robert. Robert’s blindness is a symbol of the couple’s marital disconnect. They did not communicate effectively, which is essential for any healthy marriage. The narrator’s wife worked for the blind man ten years prior in Seattle. They have remained close friends throughout the years.
It is because of this disconnection between them and their reunion that the song lyrics that the narrator recalls his mother singing: “Lord, you brought me from a long way off” (422), relates to the story. Although they have not seen each other for a year before Sonny’s arrest, the narrator and Sonny have been emotionally disconnected from each other since childhood. The seven years age difference and the way they have handled their mother’s death being part of the problem. However, despite their separation they have managed to find each other and understand each other after having gone so far off from the path they started on. The songs or hymns lyrics “Tis the old ship of Zion...it has rescued many a thousand” (425) that the narrator hears outside his window as he is about to search sonny’s room, relates to both the narrator and Sonny.
Human emotions include love and compassion, which is still not simple enough for Montag’s generation. When Montag thought about Mildred dying he knew he would not cry because, “it would be the dying of an unknown, a street face, a newspaper image”(Bradbury, p. 44). Marriage is supposed to be about love, but he doesn’t even know what that is. They are only married because that is what everyone else does. Mildred’s friends have been remarried more than four times.
