What do we expect from us? Sullivan, in his letter to 9th student strongly states the point that a high school student needs to cover a group of abilities needed for college. He is, in fact, right about these skills, however, they don’t guarantee success, there are many other behavioral and education skills learned in home that builds student’s maturity towards school. According to the author, any person needs to have always a clear goal in order to achieve what he or she wants, and as a student, this group of skills, are good examples of long-term goals –If not achieved yet-. One, maybe the most important, goal to achieve is to be a good reader: reading implies taking a book not only as a bunch of paper, full of letters, but as a friend, enjoying it from the beginning to the end with no obligations behind; associating ‘’reading’’ with terms like duty or discomfort only reflects the lack of this skill as a weakness, since students are required to read big loads of material for their classes.
We've all been wanting to be friends with those couple of cool kids to feel fully accepted and that you actually matter. Not being able to be friends with those groups is kind of lame. Increasingly as children in modern society are becoming more rebellious and independent and construct their own individual identities, many people argue that the peer they socialise with have the greatest effect on their behaviour. This idea is debateable however, as there are other institutions like the media or the family that are key in instilling norms and values of society. The ways in which peer groups socialise a person into his/her gender identity are many. Through peer group pressure along with positive and negative sanctions, it is inevitable that a young person will conform to their group’s norms and values. Firstly, the ideas of being isolated from a friendship group is a daunting vision for many youngsters, and are thus willing to adopt the groups norms and values if it means they will acquire popularity or just to be part of a group.
