High School Dropout Epidemic Decrease

Amanda Villegas I set out to investigate the topic of education, more specifically high school dropouts and how the epidemic can prevented or reduced. I chose to write about the topic because, coming from a low socio economic minority area most of my family and friends did not complete their compulsorary education, most of whom are living in poverty, struggling to make ends meet and are relying on government assistance to get by. I wondered, if we could turn back time what could have been done to help my family and friends achieve a high school diploma. I questioned if students have been taught that education is the key to success, why do they chose to drop out knowing that it is going to lead towards a very difficult to path to walk. I also questioned how could educators and parents been more aggressive in preventing these choices amongst our youth. In my paper I concluded that changing the legal age to 18 would be beneficial to society because it would force a student to be in high school until their senior year. At that point it would be pointless to dropout because they are so close to reaching their goal. And by graduating they would probably be more ambitious about education and be more likely to pursue a college education. Developing more alternative schools would also be beneficial because everybody’s life circumstances are different. Many students need to work while going to school to support their families, some need to stay home and watch their younger siblings while their parent work very demanding hours, many teenage girls end up pregnant. Alternative schools can offer flexible hours and weekend schedules for students to participate in what’s called credit recovery; also there is more one on one interaction that is sometime not always accessible in large
