Ditching School Could Result in Losing Your License

School administrators all across the country have been noticing that students have been missing too many school days. Because of this occurrence, they needed a solution to their truancy problem. One of the solutions they thought of was to take away the truant student’s driver's license. However, some people believe that school should not have anything to do with licenses. Some people believe the students should have their own choices. They can go to school and succeed or not go and fail. The school administrators should not have to force the students to go to school; however, the law says every minor must go to school until they graduate from high school. Taking away their driver's license is too harsh. The administrators should make a fair and balanced punishment. Taking away your driver's license from you doesn't prevent you from ditching school. It would make you want to ditch more, because your mode of transport would be taken away. Teens should learn from their mistakes and correct them. The truancy policy in many states is different. In Ohio, students that have fifteen unexcused absences will not be promoted to the next grade. In Georgia, however, students that have ten unexcused absences will lose their driver's license. "We know [truancy is] a problem in Georgia and directly impacts the long-term growth of students and their future earning potential. Workers without a high school diploma earn about $21,000 a year in Georgia, compared to $26,000 for those with a diploma and $43,000 from college graduates," one administrator said. For these reasons, the administrators say they are not going to tolerate truancy anymore. Some states in the East have applied this method to persuade students to go to school. Governor of Minnesota, Tim Pawlenty says," Students are much more likely to succeed in school if they're regularly showing up for classes. Linking
