Herbal Medicine and Its Effects on Pathogenic Bacteria Shawna Henry Roberts Wesleyan College CMP 102-01 Abstract Bacterial infections have increased in recent decades due to the resistance to treatments. Alternative treatment is herbal medicine which has been used to treat a variety of diseases and infections. Therefore, herbal medicine should be used to treat pathogenic bacteria. Sources from journal articles have proven the antimicrobial effects of plant extracts. Herbal Medicine and Its Effects on Pathogenic Bacteria MRSA, Typhoid fever, and Gonorrhea are bacterial diseases that have recently become resistant to their antibiotic treatment. Modern medicine has done a fine job in treating bacterial diseases and infections but when resistance to these treatments arise, it is often difficult to find proper treatment. However there are alternative treatments that have been used for thousands of years which help to combat against pathogenic bacteria. Herbal medicine is by far one of the most effective types of alternative medicine that exists. Therefore, herbal medicine should be used to treat pathogenic bacteria and the diseases that derive from them. What exactly is herbal medicine? Herbal medicine is the practice of using plant extracts, roots, and other botanic ingredients as a means to treat, cure or prevent disease, infection, or symptoms from an ailment. According to The World Health Organization (WHO), 80% of the world population uses herbal medicine to prevent or cure diseases. (Quoted in Varghese et.al, 2008) Herbal healing can take the form of extracts, pills, syrup, or powder in order to treat a variety of diseases.
