Health Care Utilization Paper Samantha Beck December 4, 2012 The debate on the health care reform has been a big issue in the last few years now. The legislation behind it has become controversial to say at best. I will be discussing how the health care reform has affected the access of health care. How it affects utilization of changes. Explain what universal health care could be, and my experience with the health care expansion. The recent health care reform measure has expanded and inhibited access to health care. The health care reform was signed into legislation as The Affordable Care Act on March 23, 2010 by President Obama. The law is to give people with no health care a chance to obtain health care affordably. It also helps individuals with preexisting conditions to be covered as well. It is aimed at primary and preventive care, and to develop more community health centers. There will also be coverage of dental benefits. The ACA is designed so everyone can obtain health care coverage. For example, there are many families out there where health care is not offered by their employers. There is also going to be help for those with a mental illness. Before, Medicaid would not cover childless adults of mental illness. Now that Medicaid has expanded to those with incomes under 133 percent of poverty. In rural areas it is hard for these individuals to access a physician. With the ACA there are to be more medical facilities placed in rural areas to make access to medical care easier. If access is easier, people are more likely to seek out medical care. There will also be help for long term care as well. There will be a policy that can be purchased while a person is working that will help pay for long term care costs for later in life. There are even tax credits for individuals and families that carry health insurance. Changes to access
