Dentistry Marcie Ann Mills HCA 391 Abstract I chose to research Dentistry because my cousin is a dentist. Even though she is a family member and we are close, I hardly know a lot about her career profession. I saw this as a perfect opportunity to pick her brain and learn more about the profession. As a dentist, you have the opportunity to strengthen your patient’s self-confidence, improve their overall health, and potentially even save lives. For example, infections such as cancer can show their first symptoms in the oral cavity. As a result, the dentist often serves as the first line of detection for these life-threatening diseases. Some dentists may only handle preventative cleaning and cavity repair, while other dentists specialize in oral surgery or creating custom dental prosthetics like false teeth. It is so much more than drills -- dentists have the ability to give people attractive, confidence-boosting smiles they can be proud of. A dentist is responsible for making sure that patients of all ages and sizes have their oral care needs covered. They are also responsible for providing their patients with the information that they need to prevent any problems from occurring to their teeth and mouth. This may include information on what foods should be avoided, how they can maintain proper dental health, and much more. They are required to help patients to recover from any diseases that affect the oral cavity. Diagnosis, preventative care, and treatment procedures to the teeth and mouth are all major components of a dentist’s job. Public Health dentists work in the community to educate citizens about disease prevention and good dental health. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons perform operations on the jaw and mouth. Prosthodontists create teeth replacements including dentures, bridges, and crowns. Oral pathologists research diseases of the mouth. Pediatric dentists provide dental treatment for children. If you want to attend dental school, it would be wise to earn your bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or other science. Though dentist schools may accept candidates from any academic background, a bachelor's of science will best prepare you for dental school and likely impact your chances of being accepted.
