Communication Opinion Lanita Poindexter HCS/320 June 22, 2014 Cecelia Sawyer Communication is a part of our everyday lives. When a person recognizes the importance of communication he or she gains a better understanding of themselves as well as others. Communication is one of the key aspects in a relationship, the workplace, and school environment. Communication is not only important but without it human life would be non-existent. A person has to be able to communicate on a personal level both verbally and non-verbally. It is all about getting a point across and ensuring that the person receiving the information has a clear understanding of what the problem is and how to fix it. Good medical care is based on effective communication from the health care providers to the patients and his or her families. If a providers communication is ineffective it can cause improper medical services such as the wrong treatment or diagnosis. According to Yolanda Partida “Effective communication is a marker of health care quality. Shared language between patients and health care providers enables gathering information for diagnosis, explaining treatment strategies, and ensuring understanding and joint decision-making” ( Partida, Yolanda, 2012). Familiar cultures may be more likely to communicate with one another due to the overall understanding of each other. For example, Greek individuals may not be able to communicate effectively with and American individual because one speaks English and one speaks French. On the other hand, American individuals may be able to communicate with each other effectively because they both speak English. The American individual may seem to share a friendship which helps to build a culture trust. Likewise, the Greek individual will have a hard time building trust due lack of similarities. It is important for medical providers to offer interpreters to people who have limited English proficiency. In conclusion, we communicate daily so improving his or her communication skills will make life a little easier. Without this tool it makes things more complicated. Enduring that the person sending and receiving the information are on the same page is very important. No one wants to receive false information especially if it is pertaining to his or her health.
