Psychology of Health in the Workplace Diana Ayala HCA/250 September 22, 2013 Amy Foster Psychology of Health in the Workplace There is a distinct relationship between health and psychology due to a person’s medical history and its impact on behavior and wellbeing. Well-being is determined by the status of your health. In the 13th century, St Thomas Aquinas stated that the mind and body functioned in sync, grabbing the attention of other philosopher, leading to the discovery that microorganisms cause illness in the 18th and 19th century. (Sarafino, 2011) Lifestyle, dominated by biological and behavioral risk factors will determine risk factors of illnesses in a lifetime. People have the choice to reduce risk factors for illness and injuries. Personality traits and illness are linked by consciousness, emotions and reactions and describe behavior and mental processes. (Sarafino, 2011) For example, developing habits like overeating will be harmful and cause Obesity or Diabetes, but people do it anyway because they enjoy it. Excessive drinking, drug abuse, eating or smoking can hinder how well specific tasks are carried out. Unhealthy habits can lead someone to feel more irritable and lose their focus at work. With time, a person will no longer be able to perform their job duties because the body will no longer protect itself from acquiring illnesses and they will become symptomatic. Only those who are motivated to improve their health will be good employees and able to effectively maintain their physical and mental health. Getting a better night’s sleep, upgrading their diet to include all five food groups, increase physical activity and paying more attention to counting calories will contribute to better health status. Employers will also notice and improvement in employee attendance, cost of insurance premiums, workman’s compensation claims and productivity. (Sarafino,…show more content…
