Crime rates increasing and decreasing at different intervals around the country hinder the solution to this controversy, requiring longer periods of time for lawmakers to come to a complete conclusion on the issue. Whether affecting the peoples' lives positively or negatively, gun control is on many a person's mind, with all of the issue's laws, permits, and requirements, cause for concern is great, particularly residents of Alaska. This paper will look through gun control's history, developments through major events in law formation, negative and positive effects, and Alaska's position on the issue. Gun control has been a serious issue over the past several decades, and remains a controversial topic in today’s world. As defined in Wikipedia, gun control “is any law, policy, practice, or proposal designed to restrict or limit the possession, production, importation, shipment, sale, and/or use of guns or other firearms by private citizens” (“Gun control,” 2012). To clarify its definition, gun control is a process to limit the ready availability of firearms to the citizens of their country. Every state in the U.S. has their own divided opinions on gun control, but more importantly, what are its effects on the residents of Alaska? To begin, looking into how gun control began within history is mandatory to fully understand the issue. As to be most obvious origin of gun control, is the ratification of Constitution of the United States of America in 1791, and more importantly, the Second Amendment.
