To evaluate the success of Pentonville, it must be measured against three factors. The first factor is the conditions for prisoners prior to Pentonville and during Pentonville. The second factor that needs to be considered is the routine the inmates faced on a day to day basis and the outcome of the rehabilitation.

Every ethical theory has its own unique way on looking into issues. Utilitarian stands out the most to me because it stands for the belief that moral rules should be choices made by a society to promote the happiness of its members. Through the utilitarian view the argument could be made that these prisoners are being treated to good and not good enough. If this theory was utilized within the jail system many issues would be solved and go along with the right and not wrong. I was a Correction Officer for a few years in the city jail called Rikers Island.

In most countries the measures in place, could be described as the commencement of criminal justice proceedings and the use of some form of prosecution and punishment service. Within England and Wales, upon conviction of a criminal offence and having been sentenced to a custodial term, her majesty’s prison service is employed to carry out, and manage the punishment of any said individual. This is where the basis of this essay lies, within her majesty’s prison service and the in-depth exploration of the administration itself. This will be accomplished through various readings and research with a view to eventually be able to identify whether the prison system in England and Wales could reasonably be described as being in crisis. In order to efficiently and accurately begin to draw conclusions regarding what state the prison system is in, it would be prudent to first establish what factors would contribute to any of the prison system’s failings resulting in a said crisis, whilst also revealing what elements or circumstance would suggest that the prison system is functioning both smoothly and successfully.
In my closing statement I will attempt to briefly sum up the key theme of surveillance in Charlotte Bronte’s Villette. In Michel Foucault’s ‘Discipline and Punish’, he explains the concept of the Panopticon as set out by Jeremy Bentham. The Panopticon was a mechanical and architectural design of a prison that’s objective was to create the illusion of surveillance at all times. Foucault applied this mechanism to society and concluded that. He suggests that there is an internalization of social control that is used to monitor society itself.
However, the implementation of; Prison improvement program has made it possible for prison to preserve the basic human rights of inmates. A prison is a place that holds people who have been convicted, or found guilty, of serious crimes, although there are a number of reasons why we use imprisonment. Customary we use prison to deter those who commit crime, and also to serve as a punishment for those who commit crime. Nonetheless we also use prison to reform people in order to get them ready for reintroduction of society. The most important thing that we use prison for is to keep people in our society safe, and to offer protection.
