Othering “Othering” defined is a process or a rhetorical device in which one group is seen as “us” and another group as “them”. In my opinion I think the word “othering” can be very simple, and all at the same time very complex. It could be a group of people who separate themselves based on their skin color or their religion. It could also be a group of people who separate themselves based on what someone is wearing. “Othering” comes as part of human nature. It is just built in us to try and be the best, even if that means stepping on other people on the way to the top. Could you imagine a world where we are all truly equal? No one is judging you, or has power over you? “Othering” could be differences in culture and diversity, and what makes each one of us who we are. That makes us an individual and unique. She talks about the history of Ellis Island and what went on there. She talks about the first time she stepped foot in Ellis Island and the way that she felt. Her chapter is very personal at time but also very factual at times. She continues to talk about the way that Ellis Island makes her feel. She imagines what the empty place would look like and feel like full of immigrants who were waiting to be processed or to be locked up. All of the emotions that were running through the place, and all the commotion. When in reality it was empty. She then goes on to talk about the horrible medical examines that took place and were required for any immigrant to come into the United States. She imagines what her ancestor went through and how they were feeling going though the whole process. Wondering if they were still excited to be in the United States, or if they were regretting their decision to come here. She talks about her grandma and what she had to go
