James Rachels’ on Normative Cultural Relativism Every culture has its own customs, traditions and beliefs that dictate the actions of its citizens. Cultural relativism states that although practices and ethical beliefs differ from society to society, it must be accepted as good, relative to each respective culture’s beliefs and moral code. Rachels believes that an act that may be frowned upon in one culture may in fact be totally acceptable in another. The theory of Cultural Relativism puts in action the idea of what people believe is morally right and how it relates to the culture that it is practiced in. Morals concern what is right and wrong.
Alternatively their culture may require certain behaviours which we find strange. Also many individuals we support have a different set of values from our own, this doesn’t mean to say that you are right and they are wrong. We need to understand and value everyone regardless of differences. There is nothing wrong with having your own beliefs and values – everyone has them they are a vital part of making us the person we are. But we must be aware of them and hoe they may affect what you do at work.
Schools and churches closed their doors as well, libraries avoided lending out books, and civilians were ordered to wear masks, avoid shaking hands, and a no spitting ban was even imposed during this time. There was a shortage of trained medical personnel including physicians in the civilian sector. Medical students began to treat the sick and ailing. Hospital facilities saw overcrowding so many businesses and schools were turned into makeshift treatment facilities for those infected with the influenza. It wiped out entire families while others were forced to dig the graves of their own family members.
In essence she is a dictator and takes advantage of the other workers, and the patients. Nurse Ratched humiliates the poor patients, which makes them lose faith in humanity, and lose their dignity. They no longer feel like they are men because during the therapy meetings she always makes them talk about topics that are reasons for why their life is horrible. During the therapy
Regret because it made me think how much different my life could be right now if I would still live with my parents, and guilt because well I'm guilty of doing exactly as the author had mentioned is a problem in America. Before reading this I've had some thought that I made a bad life choice leaving so early, but Natadecha-Sponsel does such an immaculate job at connecting this cultural difference to me personally, I think I'm going to have to run home after reading it and give my mom a hug! The author showed me that just because as a society we're brought up to be so individual doesn't mean that other people don’t still appreciate your company, or need you. Along with that I also feel sort of curious to how different not only me, but my family would be if we were brought up in Thailand rather than
This means for an individual to recognize that there are different kinds of people, such as difference in skin colors, but that difference doesn’t make a certain person any more or less of a human being than another person with a different skin color. However, it can mean that these individuals with different skin colors might bring something different to the table, which can be a positive thing. Differences in skin colors can represent the different identities of an individual, and as Wise states, “It’s not that our individual identities or national identities are unimportant: They too have meaning” (155). Diverse and differing identities shape individuals into themselves; it allows individuals to be the unique persons they are. Imagine if everyone was the same as everyone else, there just wouldn’t be any fun or excitement.
Why is diversity valued? “Diversity is the state of having people who are of different races or who have different cultures in a group or organization.” (Citations: "Diversity." Merriam-Webster.com. Merriam-Webster, n.d. Web.
The Relationship Lens is focused on processing the systems needing for an ethical organization. It protects the basic liberties of all people Everyone is entitled to their rights no mater what their income status is as well as the right to a fair process. The Reputation Lens is focused on whether we are exhibiting the virtues which are prized in the community for people who are in our roles. These ethical lenses affected my decision making in that it ensured that I was open and honest in all facts of these cases. Ethical perspective is not always about making everyone happy, because it is virtually impossible to make everyone happy.
With out the knowledge of how Polio was spread, isolation became standard. Doctors were in a race to discover a vaccine, and many of the first attempts were more than failures. At the crest of the epidemic in Minneapolis, the fear that gripped the residents was palpable. The streets, restaurants and stores mirrored that of a ghost town. People actually just packed up their life and moved away.
We as citizens have the right to live life in freedom without undue harm and to pursue our dreams and goals. Jefferson believes the government needs to respect our opinion by not putting it aside and to just listen to the citizens. The citizens have the right to set up a new government so the citizens have a better political life. To achieve the happiness we desire, the need for possession would be required. Jefferson says, “We hold these truths to be self-evidence, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness” (Jefferson, 80).
