Merriam-Webster dictionary defines philosophy as “a set of basic principles or concepts underlying a particular sphere of knowledge” (2015). According to Edwards (1997), philosophy is defined in terms of the methods it uses and the purpose for which its methods are used. According to McCurry, Revell & Roy (2009), nursing philosophies, models and theories must be used as guides to nursing practice. McCurry et al. (2009) also highlights the importance of linking the philosophical perspective of nursing, the disciplinary goals, theory and practice when expanding knowledge for the discipline.

I The Future of Nursing Education1 Edited by Linda R. Cronenwett, Ph.D, R.N., FAAN University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS “Learn the past, watch the present, and create the future.” In October 2009, Don Berwick and I were out of the country when we received invitations from Susan Hassmiller to co-author a background paper on the future of nursing education for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation/Institute of Medicine (RWJF/IOM) Committee on the Future of Nursing. Initial conversations led to long lists of potential topics to be covered. Inevitably, we kept coming back to the question: What would be useful to committee members who deserved a base for their deliberations that was focused and helpful? In the end, we decided that detailed descriptions of the current challenges and recommendations for the future of nursing education from two people were not the answer.
Influence of Evidence-Based Practice Evidence-based practice developed to facilitate a higher quality of care and the best patient outcomes. The nursing practice no longer relies on traditions of the past, or trial and error methods, but based on direct responses to the individual needs of the patient (Black, 2011). An evidence- based practice relies on using the best available research discoveries to guide the decision- making process to specific clinical situations. Applying an evidence-based practice for some nurses will be a challenge; it is a new way of thinking and practicing nursing. As the health care system struggles to provide access to care for all people in a cost-effective manner, calls for a much needed change.
