Multiculturalism: Egyptian Mummification Task 2 Schools and Society January 1, 2013 Objective: The student will utilize the information given on the rituals of Egyptian funerals to explain five cultural characteristics using each source of media. Grade Level: 5th grade Script Miss Kalan: We have been discussing the rituals of an Ancient Egyptian funeral. So far, we know, according to Egyptian culture, that man could not reach the afterlife without satisfying certain requirements. The body had to be preserved. This process is known as mummification. Only wealthy families could afford professional services. Nevertheless, each step was important and had to be thoroughly done with precision. We broke the process down into eleven steps. In your last assignment, you were put into groups of two. Each group had thirty minutes in class yesterday to write a brief explanation utilizing accurate research methods of the step assigned to you. The only restriction given was to avoid the use of any computer-based data. I will explain the reasoning for that in a few minutes. For now, I am going to call out the steps in sequence. Each group will familiarize the class with the information that they collected. Group One, Cayden and Arden, please share step one. Cayden: The body is taken into a purification tent. It is called an “ibu”. (The class giggles collectively.) Arden: They wash the body with palm wine and rinse it with water from the Nile River. Miss Kalan: Good job guys! Brianna and Jayden, please tell us about step two. Brianna: The liver, lungs, stomach, and intestines must be removed to prolong decomposition. (The classmates utter words of disgust.) It is just part of the body! Go ahead Jayden. Jadyn: The heart stays inside of the man. Morgan: Miss Kalan, why does the heart have to stay with the man? Miss Kalan: Jayden, do you know why? Jadyn: Yes ma’am.
