A Change is Coming Football is a game that has been played since the early 1900’s and back then it was played without any protection at all. So when people say that that football is a violent sport then that’s definitely the truth. This is one of the main reasons that the NFL is so popular in the United States. The fans love big hits just as much as they love touchdowns. However something that most fans and even a lot of players don’t take into account is the damage players inflict on themselves and other players when they deliver these big hits that everyone loves. For many years player safety in the NFL has not been the top priority, however player safety must be the number one priority in the NFL to everybody, including the players. The…show more content…
If a player comes to the sideline with a possible concussion the medical staff must run a series of tests and follow a checklist for “obvious signs of disqualification” such as headaches, nausea, and dizziness (Mihoces Par. 7). A player isn’t supposed to be allowed to return unless they can pass these tests. (However these tests are not 100% accurate). In some cases a player will be allowed to return from a possible concussion because they passed all the tests but they turned out to have a concussion the whole time. However later when asked about a concussion Greene said “I think it was, when it first happened I kind of got up to fast from the hit. I wasn’t all the way there. It was kind of shaky (Tracking Concussions in the NFL Par. 44). This right here goes to prove two points. That these concussion tests aren’t always accurate and players have the believe that a game is more important than their safety. In some cases when a…show more content…
Current NFL player Bernard Pollard said this on the subject “30 years from now I don’t think it will exist. I could be wrong. Its just my opinion … there’s going to come a point where fans are going to get fed up with this.” (Boren 2) Other players have spoken out against rule changes in the NFL and how it is affecting the game. That just goes back to the nature of football. They all want to be rough and tough but never want to stop and think about their lives after football. Or during it for that matter, anything can happen on any play so why put even greater risk upon your body. The NFL is changing for the better, or worse depending on who you are, but it’s changing. Now for the change to stick there has to be an all-around effort to help change it. Once the players realize the severity of the constant head injuries and they want to do something about, change the nature of the game they play, then the NFL will really be able to say it has
