Hero Essay A hero is something more than a caped crusader or a big green monster. A person can’t just magically come into the spotlight and be proclaimed as a hero. To be a hero, one must act with selflessness and do what it takes to help others in dire situations. Somebody cannot expect to be known as a hero for their actions, because a true hero is someone who does not expect any glorification at all. Sports athletes are unique people. Once they reach the pinnacle of success and are known to the world, they symbolize and represent the communities in which they are from. Pierre Garcon was an underrated player for the Indianapolis Colts. And in 2010 when he recorded an NFL record eleven receptions in the conference championship game, he gave some happiness back to the Haitians who had just lost their world to the tragic earthquake. Garcon is a hero, not because of the way he performed when his country was in turmoil, but because of the way he was able to go out, strap on his pads, and proudly represent his people despite being affected emotionally by the earthquake. Pierre Garcon’s family described him as an honorable young man. At the age of 23, Garcon inspired many people to believe that just because someone comes from a poverty stricken community, it doesn’t mean that they’re entitled to live there forever. Despite having the earthquake flowing through his mind, Garcon knew that he still had an obligation to perform on the football field. Football is his job, his dream, his one true love. “It’s been a tough week, not only for Haiti, but for Pierre as well. We’re so proud to have him representing us” described the mother of the rising star (Pedula). Even though he wasn’t physically affected, the emotional aspect had to hurt more than anything.
