Everyday people face decision in their lives, whether big or small these decisions will have a huge impact upon their future. In the short story “Flowers for Algernon” by Daniel Keyes and the poem “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost, the two speakers go through a point in their lives where they are forced to make a decision which will affect their lives and well-being. Through these two texts the idea shown is that the choices and decisions people face in their lives will ultimately shape their identity and the future ahead of them. This is shown through literary devices such as Imagery, Archetypes, and Symbolism. More specifically the Loss of Innocence Archetype is used to showcase the theme. After the narrator in "The Road Not Taken" makes the choice of taking once of the roads in the forest he states that "Yet knowing how way leads on to way I doubted if i should ever come back". The narrator faces thhe realization that when we make decisions in life that we may or may not regret we are unable to go back and undo what has been done. The choice that had been made by the narrator affected his life in a way he was not able to change or do anything about . After Charlie recieves his surgery in "Flowers for Algernon" he begins to understand many things he was unable to before. After a night out with his so called friends Charlie writes in his journal about what he has discovered. He starts out his entry with "I feel sick inside. Not sick for like a doctor, but inside my chest it feels empty like getting punched and a heartburn at the same time". Charlie comes to the unfortunate recognition of the cruelness of his coworkers and friends, and how they have been making fun of him all along. Although Charlie made the decision to get the surgery in order to improve his quality of life it ended up doing the opposite.
