In the beginning of the story, Brother recounts the day Doodle was born, saying that he was a disappointment as soon as he entered the world. The narrator was not satisfied with his brother, which resulted in the horrible things he thought about him. Brother said that “It was bad enough having an invalid brother, but having one who possibly was not all there was unbearable…” As a result, the narrator enjoyed torturing Doodle, threatening to abandon him multiple times. He even took Doodle to see the casket that was built for him, and forced him to touch it. The narrator basked in the control he had over his brother.
After receiving this information, the reader is dazzled, how could he love these people who called him a “nutwagon”? Mr. Smith was underappreciated and treated poorly, but the most heart wrecking part of it, was that through the whole “abuse[ment]” he still
David’s rude teacher not only criticized, but broke down not only him, but also his fellow classmates emotionally as well. While his classmates where being humiliated for their word choices with their answer, he sat there thinking of answers that wouldn’t bring him the most humiliation. Speaking in French, he had to list a few things that he disliked; David’s list of things that he disliked was “blood sausage, intestinal pates, and brain pudding” were a few of the things he mentioned (Sedaris). Then he goes and delivers a few things that he liked such as “IBM typewriters, the French work for bruise, and my electric floor waxer” but he then forgot that he needed to give these objects a gender (Sedaris). Students left class feeling discouraged to keep on learning the language.

Firstly, prior to writing their text, the writer must identify their intended audience, as well as the audience’s purpose for reading the text and their apparent expectations. Secondly, the writer must identify that the audience of a text is usually influenced by the text’s genre. Thus, all aspects of writing such as style, language, subject and structure are altered by the expectations that the audience holds for each genre of writing they encounter. All forms of writing are not only defined by their genre, but also by the purpose they serve for their audience. While varieties of texts, for example a tax return and a love-song, are fundamentally different in literary techniques, they all share one imperative characteristic – purpose.
Karri Johnson Literature and Community ENG 125 Introduction to Literature Instructor: Donna Hinsey November 18, 2010 The meaning of literature is an expression that develops a certain form that has a connection of an idea that endures common interest to us as the reader lifestyle. The characteristics of literature are poetry, novels, history, biography, short stories and essays. Critical thinking for literature is the topic that has the most significant meaning to a reader. Illustration An illustration is a writing pattern which uses examples to show, explain, or prove a point. For this type of writing, there is going to be a main point which the writing is trying to illustrate. The writer does this by giving examples and giving lots of details to support the examples. There should also be enough examples to really reinforce the main point. Narration A narration is basically the telling of a story, but it should have some moral or some other reason why it is important.
Dorian develops a fear of aging so he tries to live his life as if it was his last day on earth. He gets carried away and practically addicts to pleasure; his unconventional actions result in him feeling guilty and miserably. The attempts to fix his mistakes prove to make the situation even worse. It isn’t Dorian’s fault that he turns out the way he does –a pleasure seeking and self-conscious maniac, in turn showing the readers that his actions are practical. Basil, a painter, paints a portrait of Dorian which changes for the worse every time Dorian does something selfish.
Their sarcastic remarks to the powerless victim are evocative of the sarcasm Alex and his gang used on the victims that they beat and sometimes raped. Whilst Alex is suffering from the movie clips, Doctor Brodsky simply says ‘Excellent, excellent, excellent.’ Here, the Doctor is clearly portraying how he does not wish to show any sympathy towards helpless Alex, as he did do to his previous victims. The detail in which Alex goes into whilst in distress is extremely intense and vivid. Alex says ‘I was sweating a malenky bit with the pain in my guts and a horrible thirst and my gulliver going throb throb throb.’ For me, the repetition of the word ‘and’ explains to the reader just how many feelings of pain and discontent Alex is going through. Words such as ‘sweating’ ‘guts’ and ‘thirst’ are all words that we associate with labour and hard work and that is exactly what Alex seems to be going through.
The literacy also use image which is a distinct representation of something that can be experienced and understood through the senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste), or the representation of an idea. Writers use precise language in developing images, or imagery, in literature. This also keeps the reader going and into the story, it also makes you anxious while wondering what will happen next in the story. Lastly the literacy uses Imagination which is the human power that shapes artistic expression; it enables a writer's work to become an expression of meaning in our world, and allows readers to engage in identifying with what the writer's work has to say about things that matter. This is also important to readers because it also draws the attention that makes them want to read more of the story or whatever they are reading.
