Anisha Spellman Benchmark Assessment: Language Arts Unit Plan Grand Canyon University: EED-525 November 27, 2013 “Learning to read and reading to learn” is a quote that one of the schools in my district uses to help motivate reading in all students and their families. I believe reading is an important aspect of all lives. What exactly would the world be like without the reading? It is crucial that we teach this to all of the little children while they are young and trying to learn. The more they practice and the more teachers and parents instill this in their minds, the better they will become.
Reading literature develops our taste. Among its benefits are the enrichment of our language and extension of our knowledge. Literature brings us an emotional charge and the chance to share in other people’s life experiences. However, in addition to valuing literature treasures, we need to know some important rules about how to consume literature. It demands from us respect, attention, and comprehension.

They believed that, “We have a purpose, a certain audience, a particular stance, a genre, and a medium to consider- and often as not a design” (Bullock, Goggin 1). It is important to know what exactly your purpose is; all writing must have at least one. It helps you to understand how to proceed with your work. According to King, why is it so necessary to read a lot and to write a lot in order to be a good writer? Reading like anything else takes practice. I think that what King was trying to say is that when a person reads frequently they start to get a better understanding of the craft of writing. From the development of characters, to the plot building and creating a colorful timeline of events, ones writing can only improve with more reading. Stephen King was saying that confidence in prose will grow along with reading.
Carly Boykin Dr. Walonen English 210 6 September 2014 Close Literary Reading of a Narrative When reading a narrative it is important to understand what the author is trying to say with the work. One way to get a complete idea of what the author is drawing attention to the reader can do a close reading of the work. This means that the reader needs to take an individual look at the plot, characters, narrative situation, and the setting. By looking at these parts of the story individually the reader can get a fuller idea of what the author is saying. The plot is how the story is told.
Garrett McCloud Writing and Composition II Professor Dilkes Me as a Reader and writer My experience as a reader and a writer is very interesting. A lot of the times when I write I usually have a very good understanding of what I read and write but sometimes I rush and do not go over what I write. As a reader I would take the insight of the author writings and then try to incorporate or compare it to my life to see how I can relate to it. Try to put it in my on perspective in order to have an idea of what theme should be for that paper. Learning about how the theme of your paper should be related back to in every paragraph is important to the flow of the paper.
All authors write with an intended purpose; to entertain, persuade, inform, express etc. knowledge is gained from texts that inform us, theses text though can be valuable and enlightening, but can also be deceptive and untrustworthy. Through what we are reading the author has the ability to manipulate the information within the text to suit the preferred perspective. For this reason it is important that we develop a critical lens to challenge the multiple messages within those texts. This requires the readers to be able to analyse beneath the surface of the text rather than simply accepting and following the author's perspective.
I was flooded with language. I was curious about it as well. I looked at the world around me and would just point at things and look at my mom waiting for her to say something about it. Whatever she said it was I believed her and made a connection in my head with the sound made and the object. I believe most of my literacy was all dependent on my Mom’s ability to help me make these connections, especially with reading.
