The Santak’s Baby Patrick Jordan HDSF 2400 - Fall 2013 Milestone Paper #1 Nicholas Santak and his new wife, Molly Hogan, want to settle down and start having children. However they do not know if they are in the right stage of their life to begin being parents. Nick primarily works the night shift, patrolling the streets of North Saint Louis and when he is off duty he likes to spend a good portion of his time in his favorite South Saint Louis bar, drinking and smoking heavily with his high school cronies. Otherwise he is in the gym trying to keep in shape. Molly has recently been hired at a special needs school, teaching English and History. She really enjoys her job, but did not realize how much work was needed at night preparing for the next day of class. Molly loves to workout and run, therefore she keeps in pretty good shape as well. Being a young couple at the age of 27, they have many questions on where to begin and how or if their lifestyles need to change. They decide to consult a professional for advice. Nick and Molly go to their family doctor, Doctor Kelleher, and the she tells them that if they want to have a child they will need to make some changes in the way they live their, more so Nick than Molly. She tells Molly “Women who plan to have children should have a blood test before they become pregnant to determine if they are immune to the disease Rubella”(Rasmussen, 201; Reef & others,…show more content…
He says that is great that Molly does not smoke and only drinks on occasion. However Nick’s habit of smoking inside the house needs to go. She says that although the baby is inside the mother and not him, Molly inhaling the second hand smoke can be detrimental to the baby’s health because cigarette smoke is a teratogen. “A developing embryo or fetus depends completely on its mother for nutrition, which comes from the mother’s blood”.
