Fear Flying Away I have this fear. It causes my legs to shake. I break out in a cold sweat and start jabbering to anyone who is nearby. As the thought of possible death enters my mind, I realize how precious and amazing my life and the world I live in are. As I write this essay my hands and feet have become clammy and my stomach feels funny because of the memories of our summer 2010 vacation. My family and I visited the amazing state of Texas for an adventure of a lifetime. I have been afraid of heights for as long as I can remember but decided to confront that fear by taking a hot air balloon ride over the “Hill Country” close to San Antonio. Not only did the ride show me some beautiful parts of our country it taught me a little something about myself. We began our vacation with an eventful flight with lightening from thunderstorms in the area causing a delay. I was hoping for stress free travel for my son, mother and fiancé since this would be their first airplane trip, but no such luck. After the departure delay we had a fairly easy airplane ride and landed in San Antonio with many events on our itinerary. I had planned for us to go to the zoo, The Alamo, and other historical sights. On our last full day we drove to the Texas Hill Country. This is an area north of San Antonio that is a popular attraction to Texas residents because there are not many hills and mountains in the southern half of the state. The Hill Country has many beautiful landmarks and hotels. An annual festival was going on and had many attractions for us to visit. Booths were set in the park selling historical memorabilia, native festival food, souvenirs, and hot air balloon rides. My son was 15 years old and had always wanted to ride a hot air balloon. Knowing my fear of heights my immediate answer was “NO”! My time with my son was running out. At 15, he was already
