At this point in time, around 45 million Americans are currently on a diet and have spent around 33 billion dollars aiding their specific diets. (Uzoma). Fad dieting, a certain type of dieting, is specific weight loss plans that are based on popularity and not scientific information. These fad diets have been around for years and are constantly evolving. One example of a fad diet is the cabbage soup diet, which is the heavy consumption of cabbage soup over the course of seven days. It is argued that fad diets do the biggest business but the greatest harm (Foxcroft). That is, millions of dollars are made off these diets, however, they are causing great harm to our bodies, such as, certain psychological and medical effects (Uzoma). Dieting is supposed to be a healthy and easy way to lose weight and get into shape; however, fad dieting is dangerous and ineffective. Fad dieting became one of the most popular ways to lose weight for many different reasons. One of these reasons is that it was a way for people to try and shape themselves into society’s image of the perfect body. Millions of dietary books, plans online, and even DVD’s have been released over the decades for specific fad diets, because people wanted a way to lose weight and look a certain way and these diets were the way that seemed to work. Another reason fad dieting became trend is because people wanted to lead healthier lifestyles and limit their risks of medical issues. Fad dieting is a quick way to help people lose weight to reduce the risks of serious medical issues that they were worried about or that other family members may have had. Lastly, fad dieting is so popular because it offers a quick and easy solution instead of a life-long diet plan. People strive to find the easiest way to accomplish their weight loss goals instead of having to completely change their diets for the rest of their
