An example od strong leader would be Jamestown’s governor John Smith. Thoughtful and powerful man in every sense of the word. Then other important thing is that English colonists unlike spanish didn’t want a dominion over the native Indians the British men just wanted land… English North America was a place where businessmen sought investment and ordinary men and women wanted to escape from religious persecution. All they wanted was freedom and better life.As the great leader of Jamestown said:No man will leave England to have worse life in America”
Fourth, their use of the feudal system, as well as the administration which accompanied it enabled them to keep their kingdoms and subjects in check. Whilst all these factors played a role, without the force of their armies behind them, the ruler’s control of the kingdom crumbled, marking out force as the most important factor enabling effective royal government. The use of force by rulers was crucial in establishing and maintaining effective royal government in the middle ages. By the victories of armies the rulers of kingdoms could be changed in a very short space of time, as the Norman conquest of England in 1066 aptly demonstrates. This ‘Right of Conquest’ gave rulers a legitimate claim to a throne because of their military might.
On 21st April 1509, Henry VIII of 17 years and 10 months became king of England, succeeding his father Henry VII. Henry VIII was a true Renaissance prince. He was intelligent, handsome, artistic, adventurous, athletic and devoted to learning. He also wanted absolute power. He was a complex man, ruled by his conscience, which he conveniently altered to suit his needs.
He gained valuable work experience going on administrative and diplomatic missions in the Netherlands and Scotland. Henry took power at the age of seventeen, the execution of the hated ministers from the previous regime: Empson and Dudley brought with it a sense of optimism and change. When in power three main things helped Wolsey to maintain his position: his wealth, his ruthlessness and his political relationship with the King. Wolsey was the richest man in the whole of England, ten times richer than his closest rival. His home, the awe inspiring Hampton Court, was described by renowned historian David Starkey as “quasi royal”.
Norman England was characterised by the Feudal system and the building of castles. It took five to six years before the Normans gained full control of England. This essay will focus upon how William was able to conquer England which for some, with relative ease, who sees the Battle of Hastings as the day when ‘Duke William conquered all England in a single day.’ This point will be further explained later in the essay. For others it was an eventual process which needed time for the whole of Britain to put into submission. Was his victory inevitable?
This helped Peter strengthen his rule as he was able to consolidate this through military success. Peter’s success as a warrior was recognised by the award of the epithet “the Great” after the treaty of Nystadt, and it could be argued that military victories, which encouraged patriotism and raised the Tsar’s popularity, were the only factor which prevented a coup, such was the opposition to his domestic reforms. Overall America is the country that prospers from of intellectual achievements each citizen have had achieved. However, our country wouldn’t stand so high on pedestal if it wasn’t for our founding fathers that have established educational system and built world known universities. Unfortunately, many boarding school or college throughout Europe and America required high tuitions and were mainly for males that came from aristocratic families. But by 1860’s both the North and the South started to establish public school for both girls and boys. Their school years vary depending on the agricultural economy, and if they needed to be out on the fields they were excused from school.
They claimed the ‘precedent of Richard II’s minority to support their actions.’ Though the council did rule fairly on the whole, it created a big problem. Henry VI became king at the age of 11 months after Henry V died in August 31, 1422. However before Henry V died, he had made many plans for his sons minority on his death bed. John, Duke of Bedford, was appointed senior regent of the realm and was in charge of the ongoing war in France. During Bedford’s absence, the government of England was headed by Henry V’s other brother, Humphrey, duke of Gloucester, who was appointed Protector and Defender of the Realm.
This was one of the ways in which he rebuilt the royal finances which eventually left his son with a fortune. He also used dynastic royal marriages to establish his dynasty in England and help maintain peace. One of the marriages arranged was between his daughter, Margaret Tudor and James IV of Scotland. This showed that Henry took his vision of peace seriously as it meant that James' descendants would have claim to the throne. Overall, although Henry's reign faced hardships by plots and conspiracies against him it is said that 'by the standards of his time, the king was remarkably merciful in dealing with those who threatened his throne', which again contradicts the traditional characteristics associated with him.
It was World War I that led President Woodrow Wilson to formalize the draft. This act led to the successful registration of some 24 million American men. Our nation of freedom and a volunteer military only require mandatory military service when faced with a recruitment crisis during time of war. Even then it is still selective service by drafting. Now, not everyone who was conscripted was willing to serve their country and they were label “draft evaders” or “draft-dodgers”.
