Behavior Modification October 17, 2012 The L.A. Riots This paper will first review an event in which mob mentality was prompted by situational inducement. Then I will analyze mob mentality and how it is associated with Behavior Modification. I will then assess what makes people fall in line to follow a group. Finally, I will analyze the resulting mentality caused by situational inducement. In the early 1990s, there were several things that contributed to the L.A. Riots: a huge crack epidemic in South Central, more immigrants and murder was at it’s highest rate of 1,077 due to the gang rivalry between the Bloods and Crips which ended right before the riots began. Tamara stated, “When people deindividuate they are less likely to follow normal restraints and inhibitions and more likely to loose their sense of individual identity.” She also sheds light to the excitement that a group can bring and how a person could do things in a group that they wouldn’t do alone. It is like modeling in behavior modification; an action is learned by someone doing it and others following what action that first person does. If you have personal reasons to go along with the crowd that will benefit you, that could also be a good reason to follow the crowd.
