As Nabihah explained in her presentation to our class, Islam is not in any way what it is normally perceived as. Most of America’s perception of Muslims is degrading to the Islamic religion and culture. America tends to view Muslims as terrorists or evil. But, having the chance to interview Mahir, Nabihah’s friend, he explained his side of the story differently. As well as Nabihah explained while she visited. They believe in and practice for their religion on a daily basis; not because they are Muslim and are told to, but they truly believe in living their way of life through God. He said, “Yes, most Muslims are disappointed that they are being looked down upon, but are thankful for the freedom they have to choose what they are allowed to do and how much or little they practice for their religion.” The common physical objects that symbolize the Islam community, is the Star or David and the Kaaba in Mecca. He explained that the modern age of Islam doesn’t really have a true symbol that has meaning, but to associate a “brand” or a symbol for Islam for other religions to understand and recognize would have to be the Star of David known as the crescent moon. Also, he mentioned what would be the closest to symbolize Islam, and that is the Kaaba of Mecca. This is a temple of worship that millions of people go to every year and is represented as the bridge between Heaven and Earth. Also, minarets were used years ago in mosques. The Sheikh, which is like a preacher in the Islam community, would stand up on the minaret and recite prayers. But in modern age, technology has been able to supply sound systems for mosques all around. Some minarets are still in mosques just for looks because they are so big and beautiful.
