Do you think that objective or projective tests have any value when measuring personality? Justify your answer. Personality is defined as a person’s emotions, behaviour and motives that is relatively stable over time. Projective and objective tests are two different ways to measure individuals’ personality. The following shall describe these two tests as well as explore their validity and reliability. Firstly, objective tests ensure restricted responses, such as true or false questionnaires or multiple-choice). Objective tests are usually standardized and based on the big five. They are commonly self reports and therefore explore conscious thought. A widely used example is the MMPI. It asks true-false questions, in order to diagnose psychological disorders, used by qualified psychologists. The test is used for counselling, identifying suitable candidates for high risk jobs such as police officers and fire fighters and assessments. These tests are weak in areas. Objective tests are used to assess individuals usually in a self-report. This means that individuals may change their answers to be perceived under a certain light. For example, an individual taking a test for a school admission will want to be perceived as hard working and dedicated and may answer differently to be perceived that way. The MMPI has validity scales which, reflect whether the answers given reflect the individuals true personality. This however, is not guaranteed. Other strategies such as warnings on the test and adding social desirable answers to detect fake responses can be used.
