Common requests for hypnotherapy treatment are those related to stress, anxiety, habits and phobias. An understanding of the relationship between these disorders, examining the similarities and the differences between each, provides the therapist with information useful in deciding how and if to treat these disorders. It could also be argued that each client is different and each may have differing symptoms to another client, thus the therapist should review each client on a one to one basis. Stress, anxiety, habits and phobias are very similar neurotic conditions, however there are boundaries between each of them making them unique conditions. Therefore, it is important for the client to be reviewed in hypnotherapy on a one to one basis and not as a group, which could in turn result in a less effective form of treatment being provided. Each of these disorders is discussed below in terms of similarities and differences, as well as the considerations that need to be made in the treatment of these disorders. It is likely that in some point in our lives we will all suffer from some of stress, for example a new challenge such as moving house, new job, bereavement and many other things could lead to us feeling stressed. However, as mentioned, every individual is different which leads to the fact that we all have different coping strategies. Some challenges will lead to stress in many individuals but not in other individuals. More specifically, some individuals can handle stress better than others, some individual can even thrive on stress and us it as a motivator, thus helping them to cope with their busy lifestyle. Coping stategies can be learnt, so those individuals that cope well with stress are likely to have parents that also cope well, whereas those that have parents that do not cope well with life stressors are also less likely to cope very well.
